Marée Noire is the French term for oil spill. In winter of 1999, the oil tanker Erika wrecked off the Brittany coast. Large quantities of crude oil spilled into the Atlantic and drifted ashore. The coastal area around the village of Le Croisic on the Kervenel peninsula was hit particularly hard.

Six months later, Passoth travelled there to get his own impression of the effects of this tanker disaster. He used this specific accident to create a body of work that goes beyond the incident and subtly imagine the potential impact of environmental destruction on human beings and nature in general. His intension is not to judge, but to create a dense atmosphere with a disturbing effect. A narrative between fact and fiction.
